Congress Reaffirms One-China Policy Through Adoption of Resolution

PALIKIR, POHNPEI. April 04, 2023 – The Twenty Second Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia adopts Congressional Resolution (CR) No. 22-200, to reaffirm and reiterate that the One China Policy remains the official policy of the FSM.

The resolution further requests the President of the Nation to make “no alteration to the diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.”

According to the resolution, through hard work by the Department of Foreign Affairs and consultations with a broad segment of the nation’s leadership, the FSM had established its foreign affairs policy and built its diplomatic relations.  Through its consistent foreign policies and through its good standing diplomatic relations, the FSM has increased its participation in global and regional organizations, increased its accessibility to development aid, training and opportunities in health and education, and many other benefits to the Nation.

The resolution further emphasizes the importance of FSM’s consistency in its foreign policies and diplomatic relations which have “led to security, peace and stability” for the Nation.

The Nation’s diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China is an example of its consistent policy which over time has only strengthened and become significantly beneficial to both sides.

With over 30 years of strong diplomatic relations, the Congress adopted CR 22-200 and “strongly urges that its diplomatic relationship with the People’s Republic of China remain unchanged absent an in-depth study, consultation with this Congress and a broad segment of National and State Governments, and compelling evidence of any negative impact this diplomatic relationship has had on the Nation.”
