Speaker Simina calls for the 5th Regular Session a Week Early

PALIKIR, POHNPEI. August 26, 2022– Speaker Wesley W. Simina has called for the Fifth Regular Session of the 22nd Congress to convene on Monday – September 5, 2022, for a duration of 20 days.

Called to convene a week earlier than the prescribed date set by statute, the Regular Session will finalize the National Government’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2023 and to address the vacant position of the Vice President of the Federated States of Micronesia.

The Speaker’s Call to the President highlighted the need for the session to be conducted virtually in light of the recent coronavirus outbreak in the States of Kosrae and Pohnpei. As such, and in keeping with the new normal for the Congress, the virtual 5th Regular Session will begin at 10am Chuuk/Yap time, which translates to 11am – Kosrae/Pohnpei time.

As a budget session, the various Standing Committees of the Congress will hold remote hearings and meetings with the relevant departments and agencies of the national government in order to ‘wrap up and finalize the FY-2023 National Budget.’

In line with current practices in place for the Congress sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fifth Regular Session remains closed to the general public.  The public is however encouraged to follow the sessions online, streamed live through the Congress website at: www.cfsm.gov.fm
